HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 35
(By Delegates Kominar and H. White)
[Introduced March 28, 2001; referred to the
Committee on Rules.]
Naming the Elk Creek Bridge located near Delbarton off Route
65\County Road 3 the "Rush T. White Bridge" in order to honor
the memory of a native son who paid the ultimate price in
World War II while performing service at sea as a sailor in
the United States Navy.

Whereas, Rush T. White, a former teacher, husband, father,
friend and resident of this State, resigned his employment with the
Island Creek Coal Company in Holden, West Virginia, to enlist in
the United States Navy in World War II in order to serve his
country and in so doing began active duty on the twenty-second day
of December, one thousand nine hundred forty-one; and

Whereas, Rush T. White was assigned to and did serve on the USS
Cythera, a wooden yacht converted for military use as a
Storekeeper, Second Class; and

Whereas, The said USS Cythera was torpedoed on the second day
of May one thousand nine hundred forty-two by a German submarine resulting in the sinking of the vessel with the loss of nearly the
entire crew, including the said Rush T. White, our native son; and

Whereas, The body of Rush T. White was lost at sea, never to be
recovered, resulting in the Navy's declaration on the third day of
May, one thousand nine hundred forty-three, that he was deceased;
and

Whereas, The said Rush T. White unselfishly, and unhesitatingly
enlisted in the armed services of this country at a time of great
danger to members of the armed services of this country, and as
aforesaid, paid the ultimate price of his life as a result thereof;
and

Whereas, This modest honor of naming a bridge for one who paid
such a dear price for this country during a dangerous and uncertain
time is long overdue and Rush T. White's service aboard the USS
Cythera was in keeping with the high traditions of the United
States Navy and reflects credit upon himself, his country, the
Navy, and this State; therefore, be it

Resolved by the Legislature of West Virginia:

That the bridge located
near Delbarton off Route 65\County
Road 3 be named the "Rush T. White Bridge"
; and, be it

Further Resolved, That the Clerk of the House is hereby requested to forward a copy of this resolution to the West Virginia
State Department of Highways.
